Misbah Buying Guide: Amber, Bead Sizes and Tassels
A misbah, also called a tasbih or prayer beads, is a personal object. It gets carried, counted and handed down. Here's how to choose one, and what the differences actually mean.
33 beads or 45?
Most misbah have 33 beads, counted three times to reach 99. Longer sets exist, and our largest is a 45-bead set. A 33-bead misbah is lighter and easier to carry in a pocket; a longer one feels more substantial in the hand.
Natural amber
Our amber misbah are made from natural amber stones, not plastic or resin. Because amber is natural, no two sets are the same: the colour, the depth of the tone and the pattern inside each bead differ. That is the character of the material, not a flaw.
Colours range from pale ivory through honey and butterscotch to deeper tones such as galaxy green, navy and petrol blue.
Bead size and weight
Bead size changes how the misbah feels more than anything else. Our sets run from about 8 mm to 15 mm, and weights from roughly 17 g to 46 g. Smaller beads (9–11 mm) are discreet and light in the pocket. Larger beads (13–15 mm) have more presence in the hand and are usually chosen for a gift.
Shapes
You'll see round, olive, drum and rounded-barrel beads. Round beads roll easily between the fingers, olive and barrel shapes sit still a little more. It's personal preference rather than quality.
The silver tassel
Some sets come with a 925 silver tassel, and on several you can choose whether to include it. A silver tassel adds weight at the end and a more formal look; without it, the set is lighter and simpler.
How to care for amber
Amber is a natural material and softer than stone. Keep it away from perfume, alcohol and strong cleaners, wipe it with a soft dry cloth, and store it in its pouch rather than loose in a bag with keys.
Choosing one as a gift
If you're buying for someone else, a 33-bead set with 11–13 mm beads and a silver tassel is the safest choice: it suits most hands and looks generous. Every set arrives in elegant packaging with a free gift card.
